what if用于提出假设时，意思是假若……，假若……怎么办，要是……将会怎么样，其后句子可用陈述语气，也可用虚拟语气（用一般过去时或should+动词原形）。如：What if we stayed at home for a change（我们改变一下做法这次呆在家里怎么样）。
